Troops enjoy an evening at Citi Field during Second Annual Freedom Alliance Day

On Memorial Day, more than 400 troops and their families from the greater New York area enjoyed the Second Annual Freedom Alliance Night with the New York Mets. These American heroes had the chance to enjoy America’s favorite pastime as the Mets took on the Washington Nationals at the brand-new Citi Field. Before the game, the troops and their families were taken on the warning track and honored before the more than 40,000 fans in attendance. The audience gave a huge standing ovation to these brave men and women. The evening was hosted by Freedom Alliance as part of our Support Our Troops program.

Before the game, a few servicemembers had the privilege of watching batting practice on the field. Three of the military families from the group had a special opportunity to see and speak to their loved ones serving in Iraq. Shown on the jumbotron at the stadium, servicemembers from the 53rd Army Liaison team based in Baghdad had the chance to say “Hello” to their families in the stadium. The moving event was followed by a V-22 Osprey flyover.

The troops had a great time at a thrilling game that saw the Mets defeat their division-rival Nationals. Behind their outfield seats, troops and their families enjoyed free ballpark fare compliments of Freedom Alliance. Thanks to the generosity of Verizon, the Verizon Studio in Citi Field was opened exclusively to the troops and their families in attendance, who were able to make free calls to their loved ones who are stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other bases throughout the world.

Freedom Alliance thanks Steve Castleton, a great friend who devotes hundreds of hours volunteering time to Freedom Alliance each year, for coordinating the event. We also thank the members of the Mets staff for being such gracious and accommodating hosts.

Dallas, TX – Recently, 270 soldiers, sailors, and airmen were served a lunch catered by Dickey’s Barbecue at the United Service Organization (USO) facility in the Dallas/Fort Worth airport. Those in attendance were returning to either Iraq or Afghanistan after two weeks of leave. Sponsored by Freedom Alliance in conjunction with the USO of Dallas/Fort Worth, the luncheon was held to honor the troops for their service and sacrifice and to wish them well as they return to active duty in Southwest Asia.

“It’s very difficult for these men and women to leave their families and loved ones after a short furlough,” explained Freedom Alliance President Tom Kilgannon. “We are honored to partner with the USO to give our troops a sendoff worthy of the heroic service they undertake and to make this transition as relaxing as possible.”

Freedom Alliance regularly hosts Troop Appreciation Dinners and Luncheons for service members around the country to honor and thank them for their service and sacrifice for our country. Appreciation dinners and luncheons have been held for troops this year at Fort Polk, Louisiana; Fort Gordon, Georgia; Fort Carson, Colorado; and Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas, among others. These dinners and luncheons are held for wounded service members recovering in Warrior Transition Units, those returning home from overseas duty, recuperating in military hospitals, and many others stationed throughout the U.S. In addition to hosting Troop Appreciation Dinners, Freedom Alliance distributes “Gifts from Home” care packages to military personnel deployed overseas and provides scholarships to children of military heroes, among other programs.
